Chesed, in Hebrew, means loving-kindness. It is represented by the dominant, usually right hand.

Gevurah, in Hebrew, means justice, self-control, discipline, and restraint. It is represented by the left hand, usually, or the non-dominant side. 

These two concepts balance each other. For example, too much parental love can lead to a spoiled child. Likewise, too much discipline or restraint, can leave a child resentful of authority. It takes a proper balance of both, to achieve harmony in relationships.
